Community Center
“Aude Pacchioni”

Facility name: Community Center
Location: Soliera (MO)
Architectural firm: ZPZ Partners Studio
Photographer: Nicolò Panzeri

The Community Center extends over an area of 930 sqm and houses medical and nursing clinics, administrative offices, secretariat, reception, meeting rooms and services. It serves as a healthcare and social reference point for the Soliera community, addressing two fundamental design objectives:

  1. organize access points, pathways and waiting areas clearly, so that access to services is simple and direct.
  2. create an environment with a contemporary aesthetic character, well-appointed and welcoming, far removed from the traditional hospital imagery.

A project that goes beyond traditional organization

To meet these objectives, specific waiting areas have been designed in front of each clinic or pair of clinics, delimited by vertical wooden slat screens. These architectural elements not only visually mark the waiting and interaction areas, but generate a material landscape that contradicts the traditional perception of the corridor and facilitates natural wayfinding.
People are thus welcomed next to the service they are waiting for, in spaces that appear larger thanks to the visual depth effect generated by the materials and geometries.

A simple and elegant aesthetic

The idea behind the project is to create a pleasant and welcoming place, through two main criteria:

  1. eliminate long corridors as much as possible, creating waiting areas near the destination service.
  2. create an aesthetically well-appointed environment, with contemporary and warm finishes, capable of distancing the perception of the classic hospital environment, while respecting the AUSL performance requirements.

The flooring is industrial wood, as are the screens and fixed furniture in veneered wood. Together, these elements contribute to defining a bi-material and bi-chromatic landscape, in which white and wood alternate, with a simple and material texture. The objective is to create a serene and unified environment, despite a complex layout: the structure was in fact realized through the complete renovation of an old school, addressing significant layout constraints. The choice of materials aims to overcome these limitations, providing continuity of perception throughout the Community Center.

The furnishings in the common areas, carefully selected, introduce delicate color tones that enrich the visual scene, making it more varied and unexpected. The real design challenge was precisely that of proposing a new image of public space, while respecting budget constraints: a place of care and welcome that perceptually distances itself from the hospital environment.

Services and space distribution

The Community Center is organized over three floors, each dedicated to specific functions:

  • Ground floor: Blood collection point, Family counseling center, Community nursing, Community pediatrics, specialist clinics for Endocrinology, Cardiology and Angiology.
  • First floor: clinics of some General Practitioners, with dedicated entrance.
  • Second floor: Child and Adolescent Neuropsychiatry, Cognitive Disorders and Dementia Center, two meeting rooms and service desks managed by local associations.
In particular, it houses: the “Un Argine all’azzardo” desk, dedicated to combating gambling addiction; The “Free Entry” project, a free listening and psychological counseling space for young people aged 13 to 29.
